The Secret to Longevity: Valter Longo's Diet Tips!
Why do people in certain parts of Italy live longer than others? Meet Valter Longo, the man with the answers! Valter Longo grew up in Molochio, Italy, where longevity isn't just a goal—it's a way of life. For over 35 years, Longo has been on a mission to uncover the secrets to living past 100. And guess what? It starts with what you eat! Longo, now the director of the Longevity and Cancer Lab at IFOM in Milan, combines the best of the Okinawa and Mediterranean diets into what he calls The Longevity Diet. So, what's on the menu for a longer life? Mostly vegan foods, loads of veggies, legumes, tree nuts, whole grains, and fish three to four times a week. But hold the red meat, white meat, and keep eggs and cheese to a minimum! And here’s what he avoids- the five problematic Ps. Potatoes, Pasta, Pizza, Protein, and Pane—bread to you and me. They're not bad per se, but they turn into sugar faster than you can say Mangia! But wait, there’s more! Longo advocates for daily fasting—12 hours without food between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. And periodically, try a fasting-mimicking diet- high in unsaturated fats, low in calories, protein, and carbs. A study in Nature Communications, where Longo was a senior author, showed this type of fasting can reduce biological age and cut the risk of diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions. So, take a leaf out of Longo’s book. Eat smart, fast wisely, and you might just find yourself living longer and healthier. Cheers to longevity!
